NDIS Physiotherapy on the Gold Coast: What You're Entitled To and How to Get Started

If you or a family member is an NDIS participant, physiotherapy is one of the most valuable supports you may be able to access through your plan. Yet many participants — and their families — aren't sure exactly what's covered, how to arrange it, or what to expect from a session.

This guide breaks it all down clearly, so you know exactly what you're entitled to and how Elanora Physiotherapy can support your NDIS journey on the Gold Coast.

What Is NDIS Physiotherapy?

The National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding to Australians with a permanent and significant disability, helping them access the supports they need to live as independently and fully as possible. Physiotherapy is a funded allied health service under the NDIS, falling primarily under the Improved Daily Living support category (also known as Capacity Building — Daily Activities).

NDIS physiotherapy focuses on:

  • Improving mobility, strength, and physical function
  • Managing pain and reducing its impact on daily life
  • Supporting recovery from injury or surgery
  • Preventing secondary complications related to a primary disability
  • Working toward participant-specific goals — whether that's walking to the letterbox, returning to sport, or participating more fully in community life

Who Can Access NDIS Physiotherapy?

NDIS physiotherapy is available to participants whose plan includes funding for therapeutic supports. NDIS physiotherapy service may be relevant for participants living with a wide range of conditions, including:

  • Neurological conditions such as stroke, acquired brain injury, Parkinson's disease, cerebral palsy, and multiple sclerosis
  • Musculoskeletal conditions and injuries
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Developmental delays and disabilities in children
  • Intellectual disabilities where physical function is affected
  • Chronic pain conditions
  • Post-surgical rehabilitation needs

If you're unsure whether physiotherapy is included in your current plan, speak to your support coordinator or plan manager — they can review your plan and advise on whether funding is available.

What Can NDIS Physiotherapy Help With?

At Elanora Physiotherapy, our NDIS services are tailored to each participant's individual goals and plan. Common areas we work on include:

  • Mobility and movement — helping participants move more safely and independently, whether walking, transferring between positions, or managing stairs.
  • Strength and conditioning — targeted programs to build the physical capacity needed to carry out daily activities, including getting dressed, cooking, or community participation.
  • Balance and falls prevention — particularly important for older participants or those with neurological conditions where fall risk is elevated.
  • Pain management — using hands-on therapy, exercise, and education to reduce pain and improve quality of life without reliance on medication.
  • Assistive technology assessments — our physiotherapists can recommend and prescribe mobility aids such as walking frames, wheelchairs, and other equipment that can be funded through your plan.
  • Home and community exercise programs — structured programs that can be carried out between clinic visits or during sessions with an Allied Health Assistant.
  • Neurological rehabilitation — specialised programs for participants recovering from stroke or managing progressive neurological conditions, focusing on restoring movement and maximising function.

How Is NDIS Physiotherapy Funded?

Physiotherapy is funded through the Capacity Building — Improved Daily Living budget in your NDIS plan. There are three ways NDIS plans can be managed, but the type of management affects which providers you can access:

  • NDIA-managed (Agency-managed): Your funding is managed directly by the NDIA and you can only use NDIS-registered providers. Elanora Physiotherapy is not currently NDIS-registered, so we are unable to see agency-managed participants at this time.
  • Plan-managed: A plan manager handles your invoices on your behalf. You have the flexibility to see both registered and unregistered providers — which means Elanora Physiotherapy can see plan-managed participants. Simply provide us with your plan manager's details and we handle the invoicing directly with them.
  • Self-managed: You manage your own NDIS funds, pay the invoice yourself, and claim reimbursement through the NDIS app or portal. You can see any qualified, AHPRA-registered physiotherapist — which includes Elanora Physiotherapy. Self-managed participants are welcome at our clinic.

If you're not sure how your plan is managed, check your NDIS plan document or contact your support coordinator. Switching from agency-managed to plan-managed or self-managed is possible at your next plan review and gives you significantly more choice over your providers.

Do I Need a Referral to See an NDIS Physiotherapist?

No referral is required. You can contact Elanora Physiotherapy directly to book your first appointment. However, if you have existing medical documents, specialist reports, or hospital discharge summaries relevant to your condition, please bring these along — they help your physiotherapist build a complete picture and design the most effective treatment plan from the outset.

What Happens at Your First NDIS Physiotherapy Appointment?

Your initial appointment at Elanora Physiotherapy is a comprehensive assessment session. Here's what to expect:

  1. Goal-setting conversation — We'll ask about your NDIS plan goals and what you most want to achieve from physiotherapy. Your goals are the foundation of everything we do.
  2. Medical history and functional assessment — Dr Nedaey will take a detailed history of your condition and carry out a physical assessment to understand your current level of function, strength, balance, and movement.
  3. Treatment plan development — Based on the assessment, we'll develop an individualised treatment plan with clear, measurable goals that align with your NDIS plan objectives.
  4. Initial treatment — Where possible, we begin hands-on treatment at the first session so you leave feeling that progress has already started.
  5. Home program — You'll receive exercises and strategies to work on between sessions, maximising the value of your NDIS funding.

How Many Sessions Will I Need?

This depends entirely on your goals, your condition, and your current level of function. Your physiotherapist will give you an honest estimate after the initial assessment. NDIS physiotherapy is typically ongoing rather than time-limited — the focus is on making steady progress toward your plan goals over the life of your plan.

Your plan will be reviewed periodically by the NDIA, and your physiotherapist can provide progress reports to support plan reviews and demonstrate the impact of therapy on your functional goals.

NDIS Physiotherapy for Children on the Gold Coast

Children with developmental delays, genetic conditions, cerebral palsy, or other disabilities can benefit significantly from early physiotherapy intervention. Paediatric NDIS physiotherapy at Elanora Physiotherapy focuses on supporting physical development, building strength and coordination, and helping children participate as fully as possible in school, sport, and daily life. We work closely with parents and caregivers to ensure therapy goals are embedded into everyday routines.

At Elanora Physiotherapy, we understand that NDIS participants deserve more than just tick-the-box treatment.
